| Centretown Guest House
is a gay-owned and gay-operated establishment, open all year long. It
has served the gay community in Halifax since 1993. The majority of our
guests (perhaps 95%) are gay or lesbian.
Conveniently located, Centretown is only a fifteen-minute walk to the heart of downtown Halifax. Bus service is exceptionally good (usually never more than a ten-minute wait), and on-street parking is always available nearby. The immediate neighbourhood includes banks, several restaurants (regular and fast food), a movie theatre, dry cleaners, drug store, and many other businesses. Centretown was originally built in 1916 as the retirement home for a sea captain and his wife, who was herself a prosperous store owner. A modest home from the Craftsman period, it is a two and one-half storey bungalow design, one of the first in the Halifax area. It was built from Douglas fir that was transported from British Columbia by steam engine freight train. The house has been completely renovated from roof to basement, and a large sun room and second-floor ensuite were added. (Last revised on Monday, May 3, 2004) |
